The Facts About Hyperglycemia
It is a known fact that, when a body fails to breakdown glucose or process it for use by the different cells, the person could be suffering from diabetes. Since glucose was not broken down nor was it absorbed by the cells, it continuously circulates through the bloodstream where it could cause a number of complications.
Hyperglycemia, the presence of elevated amounts of glucose in the blood stream, is one of the earmarks of diabetes. In the US and a number of other countries that use the metric system, blood sugar level is measured by milligrams per deciliter. There are also countries who measure blood sugar level in millimoles per liter.
Hyperglycemia can come in two forms – fasting hyperglycemia and postprandial or after-meal hyperglycemia. Fasting hyperglycemia occurs when the blood sugar level is higher than 90 to 130 mg/dL after fasting for at least 8 hours; while postprandial hyperglycemia occurs when the blood sugar level is higher than 180 mg/dL. This blood sugar level is usually achieved one to two hours after a large meal.
In diabetic people, hyperglycemia usually shows itself in the form of increased thirst, headaches, weight loss, difficulty concentrating, frequent need to urinate, and fatigue, among others. In prolonged situations, diabetic people might show skin infections, decreased vision, and sores that take time to heal.
In order to monitor blood sugar level, one would need to have a glucose meter such as the Ascensia contour. These glucose meters usually come in a set containing the meter, testing strips like the Ascensia contour test strips, lancing device, and lancets that can be used to draw blood.
When using these glucose meters, blood is drawn from the fingertips with the use of the lancets and the lancing device. One of the Ascensia contour strips is then placed on top of the lancing device. The capillary action of these strips allows blood to be absorbed. This is then placed in the meter device which checks the blood glucose concentration. A reading is then displayed in the screen.
If you are suffering from diabetes, it is a good idea to keep a good stock of Ascensia contour strips and lancets. This would allow you to regularly monitor your blood glucose level and keep your diabetes in check.
