Working With The Energy Of Joy

Let's speak about joy. It is something that shines out of every pore in your being. It bubbles up out of your heart and your mind. Its energy is soft, light and clear. Joy is very transforming. You don't need a lot of anything to be joyful. People in the poorest of circumstances can be filled with joy. One can choose to be joyful. It is a choice that can made every day.

Joy can also be a tool of guidance. If we can be led by what makes us joyful, we can begin doing more of the things that will bring us a fulfilled life. Just follow the joy.

Somehow we have been told in the past that we are not meant to enjoy life, and that it must be drudgery and hard work. I didn't enjoy my life much in the past, but I began to transform misery into joy. I gave myself permission to laugh and enjoy my life. I began to ask myself, "What do I really love to do?!" and I started doing more of these things. Even if it was something very small, it was a beginning. Now, I often feel a tremendous amount of joy.

There is an exercise that I suggest that can transform whatever mood you find yourself in to one of joy. It is to list ten things right in the moment that make you joyful. They can be very simple things to list: that you found a seat on the train, that you are going to your favorite place, that you are meeting your favorite friend, or that you have this moment alone; that you see a child playing, that you see a little dog and his little tail is wagging enthusiastically, or that you hear a beautiful song; that you are in love, or that there is something special happening, that it is a sunny day, that you have ten toes, and ten fingers; that a stranger standing across from you is wearing a fantastic color, or you are wearing your favorite color, or perhaps you remember a day at the beach and the sound of the ocean.

You can add anything you want to your joy list. Your list will change moment by moment. And you can keep it very private if you like. The point is to do it in the moment, and you can add an affirmation for yourself: "I'm happy right now because that person is wearing blue today." or, "I can be joyful because that silly little dog is wagging his little tail."

I find many things to be joyful about during the day, and you can too. Look around you to find what can prompt you to be joyful. Do it. Make a choice to be joyful. Make a choice to embrace the moment, to enjoy the moment. ‘Enjoy' is a word that to me that means to join with joy. So if you en-joy someone or something, you are joining to them for that moment with joy. To enjoy life is to join with life with joy. To enjoy soccer game is to join the game and the fun with joy. To enjoy moment-by-moment the life that you are building is to join to each moment that you find yourself in with joy. Fun, isn't it!!

You can create joyful moments and carry these with you wherever you go. When you meet someone, let your joy really flow to her/him. Enjoy the meeting, enjoy the discussions, enjoy the food, enjoy the touches, and the show of affections. Joy is something to be shared and savored. When your pool of joy is filled up, empty it all out in another moment and for another encounter. Enjoy animals. Enjoy people. Enjoy your life moment by moment.
Add new things and new moments to your changing joy list.

If something happened that was very unpleasant, and you just don't want to remember it, then your joy might be remembered when you left or as you were leaving. Or that it is now finished and you never have to go through it again. Joy, that you were strong enough to go through it, or that you knew Jesus, or your guardian angel never left you in that moment. Or Joy that you are now free.
We can be incredible instruments of joy for someone else. Open to each person, and choose joy. Enhance the joy that is already there and let it flow out. Call it forth. copyright 2006 Yoga Kat

How much joy does your friends bring to your life?

I had some friends in Charleston I haven't seen all year so I don't have any close friends. I made a few close online friends which has been a joy learning about them and getting to know them.

How much joy does your friends bring to your life?

My friends bring A LOT of joy in my life. Actually, I wouldn't know what I'd do without them. My friend Roxanne is someone I knew since we were babies, no joke. Our parents actually grew up together, it's apparent we're VERY close. She's a lot of fun, and she's like my sister, so she down to do anything, and she's caring. My friends Alisha and Angie, I actually met them in kindergarten after Roxanne and I moved her to Chicago, (because our parents were really close, we came together) and I didn't like the fact that I was placed in school and just left there, lol, so they cheered me up. Then, in second grade, I met my other best friend Maria, and we're still friends to this day. In 8th grade, I met Jen. Basically, after meeting all of those other friends throughout my lifetime, Roxanne, Alisha, Angie, Maria, and Jen, are my actual BEST friends. That's why I listed because they make me happier than ever. They're like family.

Just when it feels like every possible version of every possible holiday song has been recorded already, Pink Martini’s Joy to the World finds ways to revive holiday spirits. While the band could very easily do a swanky lounge-pop album of the season’s songs, this globally minded collection is traditional and unpredictable at the same time. Pink Martini begins Joy to the World with an intimate rendition of “White Christmas” that’s so faithful to the original that it features the sunny California prelude that was included when it debuted in the film Holiday Inn, then they follow it with a lush orchestral rendition -- sung in Japanese. Yet quirks like these don’t feel kitschy; aside from “Santa Baby,” Joy to the World’s lone indulgence in camp, the album sings of peace and celebration in many tongues. Whether they give “Little Drummer Boy”'s arrangement a Middle Eastern-meets-lounge twist or sing “Silent Night” in German, Arabic, and English, Pink Martini ensures this is truly a multicultural party. The group even makes fresh choices for Hanukkah and New Year’s, presenting the conclusion of the Amidah prayer set to music (“Elohai, N’tzor”) and “Ocho Kandelikas,” a Sephardic song sung in Ladino. “Congratulations,” a song for the Chinese New Year, is such a breath of fresh air compared to “Auld Lang Syne” that it’s easy to forget that this song would normally be heard in late January or early February instead of the end of December. And when “Auld Lang Syne” arrives with an arrangement inspired by Brazilian Carnaval music, it sends off the album, and the year, with a huge celebration. A near-perfect blend of spirituality and festivity, Joy to the World lets listeners hear the holidays with new ears, and maybe see it with fresh eyes, too. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

Kevin Mahogany's decision to cover Motown hits in a jazz setting stems from his desire to not only increase the audience for jazz, but to add new material to the music's repertoire, in addition to the established standards. The results are ear-opening, particularly for those who never seriously listened to the likes of Marvin Gaye or Smokey Robinson. Mahogany, whose richly textured baritone helped him become one of the top male jazz vocalists to emerge during the 1990s, arranged several of the tracks, including the stark "My World Is Empty Without You," where his only backing is provided by bassist Melissa Slocum and percussionist Don Alias, as well as a swinging treatment of "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game." The singer is backed by a quartet of singers for catchy doo wop interpretations of "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" and "Reach Out I'll Be There." Pianist James Weidman, who provides just the right support on six of the CD's 11 tracks, is the sole accompanist and arranger of "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)," reworking this huge hit into a lush ballad. Gaye's "Pride and Joy," arranged by guitarist Dave Stryker, is recast in a driving hard bop setting, featuring Mahogany's scat exchanges with the muted trumpet of Jon Faddis. Stryker also contributed the tasty chart of "I Can't Get Next to You" and a startling, very slow ballad treatment of "The Tears of a Clown," where his acoustic guitar is the only backing for Mahogany's magical vocals. This stunning release is heartily recommended. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Gerald Trottman - Baritone; Jon Faddis - Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Charles Haynes - Telephone Voice, Drums; Dave Stryker - Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar; Don Alias - Percussion; Greg Clark & California Praise - Vocals (Background), Sax (Tenor); James Weidman - Piano; Kevin Mahogany - Vocals;
