Tips for Adjusting Commercial Garage Door Springs
Commercial garage door springs come in two types, torsion and side mounted. The difference between the two is simple. Torsion springs exert their counterbalance force or energy in a twisting motion, while side mounted springs will extend and contract to counterbalance the garage door.
A Simple Test
The test for your garage door springs is quite simple. First disengage your garage door opener from the garage door. Then open the garage door by hand. It should require very little force to do and flow smoothly. Then close the door down, so it is opened only three or four feet. If it remains opened with your hands completely removed then the springs are functioning properly. If it closes down by itself then the springs need to be adjusted or replaced.
Replace Both Commercial Garage Door Springs
Torsion springs will be mounted on a shaft above the garage door and often times can be adjusted simply with an electric drill. If one of your torsion springs is broken and needs to be replaced then you are well advised to replace both of them, because the other one is on its way out also.
Side Mounted Garage Door Springs
Side mounted springs will be mounted on the sides of the garage door and use a set of pulleys to provide tension to the garage door system. To replace or adjust side mounted springs, the garage door must be opened fully, so all tension is released. Then the garage door must be securely held in the open position by attaching a "C" clamp to the door track.
Always Use a Safe and Secure Ladder
To adjust torsion springs, the garage door must be in the closed position. However; before you close the garage door and disengage the door opener, make sure that you have all the tools and a safe ladder inside of the garage with you. Also, make sure that the area that you intend to work in is well lit.
