Pain That Brings you to your Knees
Have you ever imagined yourself not having knees? Surely, it is a delight to see those shapely, long legs, but without the knees, those legs will be useless. The knee is a weight-bearing joint that connects the thigh and the leg to each other. The role of the knees is to allow movement of the legs by flexing (bending) and extending (straightening) to perform normal daily functions such as walking, sitting, standing, running, and even kicking. However, today's active society and fast-paced lifestyle has resulted in the rising number of problems related to knee conditions.
When acute knee injuries and trauma occur, parts of the anatomy may be ruptured, such as the ligaments and cartilages which cause knee pain. Habitual or chronic overuse of the knees can cause inflammation, making the knees swell and painful.
Knee pain is no longer a rare case and has become a very common musculoskeletal complaint that brings people to pay a visit to their doctors. Some people may consider knee pain as a minor problem, but it can lead to serious discomfort and acute disability, especially if the damage is severe. Although most knee pains are caused by an injury, medical conditions such arthritis, gout, infections, and chondromalacia can also bring you to your knees.
Acute knee pain is described as severe pain that comes on suddenly and is usually the result of injury or infection. Some of the more common knee injuries and their signs and symptoms include the following:
Ligament Injuries – when the tough bands of tissue that connect the thighbone (femur) and the lower leg bone (tibia and fibula) together, also known as ligaments, are torn as a result of a fall or contact trauma, most likely it will cause instant pain in the injured area. Discomfort may range from mild to severe. Pain is heightened when you walk or bend your knee.
Tendon Injuries - tendons are thick, fibrous cords that attach muscles to the bone. Tendinitis is irritation and inflammation of one or more tendons and may involve one or both knees. Pain and swelling takes place at the front knee and below the knee cap. One will not be able to straighten the knee when tendons have been totally ruptured.
Meniscus Injuries – involves tears in the C-shaped cartilage that curves within your knee joint. It may hamper knee movement and cause your knee joint to lock so that you can't extend it completely. When this happens, the knee must be surgically treated.
Loose Body – is when an injury or degeneration of bone or cartilage causes a piece of bone or cartilage to break off and float in the joint space. This may not create any problems unless the loose body interferes with knee joint movement — the effect is something like a pencil caught in a door hinge — leading to pain and a locked joint.
Dislocated Kneecap – involves the slipping of the triangular bone that covers the front of your knee (patella) out of place, usually to the outside of your knee. Dislocation is visible and your kneecap swings from side to side. There is intense pain and swelling in the affected area and difficulty walking or straightening your knee. Once a kneecap has been dislocated, there is greater risk of it happening again.
Osgood-Schlatter Disease – affects teens and preteens who are into active sports. This overuse syndrome causes pain, swelling and tenderness at the bony prominence (tibial tuberosity) just below the kneecap and frequently affects just one knee, but may develop in both knees.
Hyperextended Knee – is an injury in which the knee extends beyond its normally straightened position, such that it bends back on itself. Sometimes the damage is relatively minor, with pain and swelling when you try to extend your knee. But a hyperextended knee may also lead to a partial or complete ligament tear.
Septic Arthritis – is a condition when the knee joint becomes infected, leading to swelling, pain and redness. Septic arthritis often occurs with a fever.
Sometimes an injury can lead to chronic knee pain. Often, chronic pain results from a medical condition such as:
Rheumatoid Arthritis – this is considered to be the most debilitating of the more than 100 types of arthritis and can affect almost any joint in the body, including the knees. Aside from pain and swelling, aching and stiffness will be experienced when you get up in the morning or after periods of inactivity. It may lead to loss of motion in the knees and eventual deformity of the knee joints.
Osteoarthritis – is also known as degenerative arthritis and the most common type of arthritis. It's a wear-and-tear condition that occurs when the cartilage in your knee deteriorates with use and age. It usually develops gradually and may cause varying degrees of pain and swelling when you stand or walk, especially before a change in the weather. It also can lead to stiffness, especially in the morning and after you've been active, and to a loss of flexibility in your knee joints.
Gout – is a form of arthritis characterized by redness, swelling and intense pain in the knee that comes on suddenly and without warning, usually at night time. The pain usually lasts five to 10 days and then stops. The discomfort subsides gradually over one to two weeks, leaving your knee joints apparently normal and pain-free.
There are some relatively minor instances of knee pain that respond well to self-care measures. However, more serious injuries, such as a ruptured ligament or tendon, may require surgical repair. Moreover, not every knee problem can be prevented but one can take certain measures to reduce the risk of injury or disease. Good rehabilitation and focus on strength training of the muscles that control your kneecaps can greatly help in the prevention of dislocation as well as other injuries.

I am knitting over the knee socks, 4ply, and want a firm band. How do I incorporate knitting elastic. Have never used this before.
I assume you are using the thin thread of elastic? Then you just use it together with your yarn. Hold the two together as one, and knit with it. It will make your yarn stretchy and pull in tighter on the ribbing. I suggest that you use a 2/2 rib for better elasticity.
You can also add the elastic later by threading it through the stitches, but I find it too much work.

Knee Deep $13.58 True musical omnivores, Copenhagen's WhoMadeWho have always been far too slippery a beast to be encapsulated by the standard-issue genre tags -- dance-punk; disco-rock -- they're often saddled with. To wit, even before completely overhauling their self-titled 2005 debut into a set of beatless, acoustic psych-folk (Green Versions), they'd already sprinkled a surprising number of gentler, guitar-led tunes among its party-starting electro jams. And 2009's The Plot was a wily, wayward amalgam of strutting glam rock, slo-mo space pop, blistering techno-boogie, and goofy instrumental funk. So if the markedly moody, downcast turn the trio take on their third proper album (and Kompakt debut), Knee Deep, comes as a slight surprise, attentive followers should at least realize they're no strangers to the unexpected. Actually, this is easily the band's most cohesive, streamlined outing yet, not just due to its relatively sleek length (it's technically billed as a mini-album, though it's a generous one at 38 minutes, not counting a bonus instrumental which plays like the intersection of Daft Punk and Explosions in the Sky) but because it sustains a consistent, though hardly monochromatic, air of melancholy and doubt, tapping into the darker aspects of their moniker's wry, pithy existentialism. "There's an Answer" sets the tone, with sinuous bass clarinet, ominous strings, and choral accompaniment bolstering Jeppe Kjellberg's restrained, world-weary vocal -- "now the man is not so sure of what he feels," he muses blankly -- and only an intermittent, submerged 4/4 thump gesturing toward the kinetic dynamism of the band's earlier work. That sense of alienated uncertainty grows even more marked on the brooding, throbbing darkwave of "Every Minute Alone," which can't even muster up a refrain more confident than a weak, bewildered "should I call you up," question mark left ambiguously unexpressed. WhoMadeWho haven't entirely lost their interest in moving bodies, though: the pulsing syncopated blips of "All That I Am" (think Booka Shade circa Movements) offer plenty of dancefloor potential -- especially if it's goth night -- to say nothing of the viciously strobing synths and thunderous disco-funk groove of the powerhouse "Two Feet Off Ground." Despite the bleakness and gloom that permeate the album, it never feels timid or insular; both musically and emotionally, Knee Deep is far weightier than its title implies. WhoMadeWho have been accomplished, even inspired, in the past, but here they emerge on a whole new level, displaying a subtle command of tension and release and an assured, seamless blending of rock and electronics, suffused with unfeigned emotionalism, which calls to mind the confidence and mastery of marquee acts like LCD Soundsystem and Radiohead. The Knee Plays [Bonus DVD] $11.02 When The Knee Plays was originally released by ECM in 1985 -- on LP -- it offered such a wildly different view of the Talking Heads' frenetic, nervous frontman and guitarist it took listeners aback by how consciously "underwhelming" it was. The back-story is unusual in and of itself: David Byrne and Robert Wilson had begun a friendship that became a working relationship. Wilson had a commission to create a work to be performed at the 1984 Olympic games called the CIVIL WarS (sic). He invited Byrne to compose the "knee plays," or, the pieces that existed in the gaps between this enormous set of plays, which were to be performed over multiple days during the games. Byrne, who had visited New Orleans and taken in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, had been deeply influenced by their approach to harmony and rhythm. Byrne tried to get the Dirty Dozen to perform the material he had written for Wilson's work -- which never happened the way it was supposed to due to some kind of politicking, but he claims in the liner notes that, "musically it was not happening...they weren't comfortable being strapped into scores, [it] was not a comfortable creative place for them." OK, so Byrne eventually hires a crack band in Los Angeles with players like Chuck Findley, Pete Christlieb, Rich Cooper, Ray Brown (the trumpeter, not the bassist), Garnett Brown, Paul Humphrey, Fred Wesley, David Stout, Ernie Watts, and others. They record the thing and it comes out on ECM in a somewhat truncated form (Byrne takes a sideways swipe at them in his liner notes that isn't all that obvious, but since he admires codes in popular culture so much, he often speaks in them too; this is one of those times).There are 12 pieces and it sounds somewhat stilted. It was simply so far outside the work Byrne had been doing, what with its spoken narratives that were as inspiring as milk. The music, however, is beautiful, killer, in fact, despite the fact that it's very warm, extremely melodic, and not terribly funky -- despite the players. If anything, Byrne is the hindrance to the project despite being its creator. Knee Plays is wonderful, it has the overtones and suggestions of a New Orleans brass band without any of its feeling or energy. This is studied, rather disciplined music; it feels like what it is: a score. The band probably felt confined, reined in here, too; but it's still a very compelling listen that reflects the identity of its creator more than anything else -- which is fine. That said, Byrne's voice, as it speaks in clipped, controlled tones, is still bland enough that it can be audibly edited out by shifting perspectives to make his voice and words just another instrument in the set, since his narratives are trite and nonsensical for the most part. When heard in this way, the work takes on an entirely different feel, one that moves the listener along some railroad track to unknown places -- much in keeping with the original concept of Wilson's work.This new edition is done in grand |
