Communicating With Patients - 12 Essential Tips For Caregivers

Who is a caregiver?
Now, a caregiver is an individual, who addresses the needs of the aged, the disabled or dependent children. Caregivers need to be versatile because they have to become accustomed with their patients’ needs. With regard to this, caregivers could be delegated to French, Spanish, or any other overseas community, where they may have to attend to an old person who cannot communicate in English. It is for this reason that most caregiver courses include language courses and communication skills in their syllabus.
A significant aspect of caregiver training is to ensure that the caregiver develops excellent communication skills. The aged, the disabled, or the infirm, require the complete cooperation of the caregiver. On the other hand, each one of them could have varied needs and their desires could be quite dissimilar to that of others. Hence, it is a distinct plus point if one is capable of communicating with them in the right way. Being a caregiver, you should be careful regarding the use of certain terms and actions. All this can be found out when one undertakes communication skills improvement or training.
While handling older people, the caregiver needs to have the fundamental communication skills polished, such as looking at the person you are talking to and maintaining eye contact, as this is of the essence in human interaction and it is a way of showing respect. Positive communication is the secret to coping with the elderly, who are detected with an ailment and are in our care.
The following are essential guiding principles for the caregiver to develop fine communication skills in order to provide proper care to patients.
Twelve Essential Tips When Communicating With Patients:
1. Learn to be lucid and explicit while communicating with patients. Address them directly and do not cause them to speculate on what you require of them. You need to convey to them precisely what you require in a gentle and pleasing tone.
2. Rather than saying "You", try to say "I" when communicating with them. By this, you are articulating your thoughts without holding your patient responsible or causing them to become suspicious.
3. Be conscious of your patient’s sentiments and attitude. Never utter anything that could possibly cause offense to them.
4. As an important part of communication, particularly in providing care to the infirm, you need to be a fine listener. In general, people, apart from ailing adults and kids, require somebody to whom they can ventilate their thoughts and emotions. Usually, when the ailing, the disabled or dependent children wish to convey something and nobody pays them any attention, they are likely to act up and withdraw into their shell.
5. Body language can be used effectively to put across the message to the patient. (This covers making signs and non-verbal cues)
6. Give them confidence and set their mind at rest when they require assistance.
7. Keep an eye on them always.
8. Never try to break into a person’s thought or endeavor to finish a person’s sentences while he is conversing with you.
9. Modulate your tone to suit the message you wish to convey. For instance, if the patient has to hear something nice from you, then you have to adopt a heartening tone.
10. Be patient when waiting for an answer to a query and recognize the sentiments of the patient even though you disagree with them.
11. Pay attention to the language expressions, which an elderly person employs in conversing with you. When you respond, employ simple vocabulary and speech so that he is able to understand
12. A majority of the infirm, aged and dependants prefer to be spoken to in a particular way. If this is the case then you should fall in line with their sentiments. This helps build rapport and makes for easy interaction.
Since you are a caregiver, these suggestions would be very useful to you in connecting with your patient in a much better way. These tips will enable you to have a better awareness of your patients and to recognize the way in which they are feeling when they are down.

When is medical personnel (doctors and nurses) not responsible for a patient ?

And yet at the same time responsible for that patient ? If a patient demands something they have the that right, yet if they are wrong it is the medical personnel who is responsible. Why does almost everything falls back into the hands of the medical personal even after a patient is demanding their rights? If you demand things aren't you automatically obligated to take the consequences and responsibilities pertaining to your demands.

This is what documentation in the chart is for.

I don't quite know what it is you have in mind, but if it's a situation like the previous poster outlined, or a question of leaving a hospital against medical advice (AMA), the doctors have to explain why they don't think the patient's action is a good idea, and explain in the chart what they did and said and that the patient chose to do something else.

A patient cannot just demand anything, full stop. They have autonomy, assuming they are competent to make decisions for themselves, but they can't, say, demand that a surgeon take out their appendix if the surgeon doesn't think that they have appendicitis, or demand that a doctor prescribe a drug if that is not medically warranted. But they certainly have the right to refuse any given treatment, if they choose to do so, even if refusing will (in the doctor's opinion) lead to a bad outcome. They are free to not take their medications (short of a court order) and they are free to ignore medical advice.

We, on the other hand, are obligated to treat the patient to the best of our ability, but we can't force treatment on anyone (if a competent adult). If a patient refuses, so be it. But we aren't obligated to do exactly what a patient wants if we don't think it's the right thing to do.

Unable to free himself from his sterile confines, the immobile patient's deepest fears form the basis of a dark story that he shares with his young companion -- a little girl who visits his room as she recovers from a nasty fall. As the eerie tale unfolds, reality and fantasy gradually merge to form a strange world in which anything is possible. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi breaking her arm. There she meets bedridden Roy (Lee Pace of PUSHING DAISIES), a Hollywood stuntman who is paralyzed after an ill-fated attempt to impress a woman. Roy beguiles Alexandria with a tale that mirrors his own failed romance but his imagination takes it to new levels. People in the hospital appear in the story à la THE WIZARD OF OZ, but it's a surreal, fantastic epic that enchants Alexandria and convinces her to bring morphine pills to Roy so he can commit suicide. Based on the Bulgarian film YO HO HO, THE FALL is an excellent example of a triumph of style over substance. The plot is interesting and the acting is solid--particularly the work from first-time Romanian actress Untaru--but it's hard to pay attention to any of that when Colin Watkinson's cinematography and Ged Clarke's production design are so stunning. Though Tarsem is working in a vein similar to Guillermo del Toro and Terry Gilliam, THE FALL is a uniquely gorgeous work that will impress anyone who values beauty in film.

Anthony Minghella wrote and directed this award-winning adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's novel about a doomed and tragic romance set against the backdrop of World War II. In a field hospital in Italy, Hana (Juliette Binoche), a nurse from Canada, is caring for a pilot who was horribly burned in a plane wreck; he has no identification and cannot remember his name, so he's known simply as the English Patient, thanks to his accent. When the hospital is forced to evacuate, Hana determines en route that the patient shouldn't be moved far due to his fragile condition, so the two are left in a monastery to be picked up later. In time, Hana begins to piece together the patient's story from the shards of his memories; he's actually Count Laszlo Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), of Hungarian nobility and an explorer working with a group mapping uncharted territory in North Africa. An Englishman, Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth), soon joins Almasy's team; travelling with him is his lovely and spirited wife, Katherine (Kristin Scott Thomas). Katherine and Laszlo soon fall in love, which leads Laszlo to betray his friend, his country and all that is dear to him. Meanwhile, Hana and the Patient are joined by Kip (Naveen Andrews), a Sikh with a gift for defusing mines, and Caravaggio (Willem Dafoe), an intelligence agent who knows some of Laszlo's most shameful secrets. The English Patient won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress (Juliette Binoche). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Movie Guide
