This can be a tear to the ACL, MCL, PCL, or LCL; each of these ligaments provide support. The incidental use of the word "ouch" would not describe the way you feel when something like this happens. These kinds of knee injuries can be very painful and the stability of your knee can be compromised without the strength of these ligaments.
There are 3 different levels of severity that doctors use to determine how serious your knee injury is:
Level One - There is no laxity or give in the ligaments of the knee. This indicates that there are only a few ligaments that are actually stretched / insulted around the knee.
Level Two - There is moderate laxity or give in the ligaments of the knee, which means that there are some fibers of the ligament that are torn but not all of them in the knee are torn.
Level Three - There is a complete give in the ligaments of the knee when there is stress placed on the area. This means that most likely all of the fibers in the ligament are torn and there is a significant injury that has taken place.
Depending on how bad your knee ligaments are injured, there are different treatment plans that your physician may recommend to you. Whatever level of knee injury you have, wearing a knee brace can be one of the best ways for you to help protect your knee and its structural integrity. As you can already think to yourself that it probably would be wise, to look back six months from now, wondering what you should have done differently. If you are having knee discomfort you should do something proactive to help protect yourself.

What are good exercises to strengthen previous sports injury (on knee, ankle, calf)?
The injury was about 8 years ago but there is recurring pain especially when the temp drops. Would you recommend yoga and weights training? Any specific yoga pose or weight exercise? What to do when pain returns due to cold weather?
Any specific weight training exercises? Yoga asanas?
For me, beginning yoga is the perfect warm up. Walking helps so much and not marathon running, just a nice even pace. I also found a drink called Joint Juice to be helpful to me, it contains the usual Glucosamine and a few other things but the difference is that it isn't a horse sized pill you have to gag down 
and touch something like a Wall or whatever and go up on your toes then back down. Do 3 sets of 10 each then gradually build from there. I highly recommend the video store for a wealth of exercise tapes to help with just that, and the number one if you have access is swimming. That is a saving grace with zero weight bearing.
