A Review Of The Fellowes Powershred Sb-80 Strip-Cut Paper Shredder
The Fellowes PowerShred SB-80 paper shredder is a compact device that really has a lot of shredding power. That should be no surprise given that Fellowes is a renowned shredder manufacturer, but this device is really something. Here's a look at this product's many strengths, as well as a peek at what could possibly be improved.
The strengths:
- The SB-80 has the ability to shred a wide variety of items. In addition to paper, it can destroy CD's and credit cards. It will also tear up any document fasteners (i.e. staples) left in your paper. This is a strip-cut shredder and will turn your items into strips that are 7/32" wide.
- This machine can shred up to 18 sheets of paper at a time or about 200 sheets per minute. The feed opening is 9 inches wide, so you'll be able to get rid of documents printed on both letter- and legal-sized paper. There's a separate slot for the CD's. The waste bin can hold up to 7 gallons of shreds.
- The SB-80 will start and stop automatically which can help you save power. The machine will also stop running if a paper jam occurs or if your hands are too close to the feed opening. A full waste bin will cause the machine to shut down as well.
- This machine has a paper capacity indicator that will let you know if you're trying to stuff too many sheets into it. There is a reverse mode to use in the event of a paper jam.
- This shredder is surprisingly compact. It is less than 2 feet tall, so you'll be able to store it anywhere, even under your desk by your feet. It only weighs 37 pounds, but it's still been outfitted with casters to make moving it easier. Plus, this shredder looks great with nice silver and blue/black styling.
- Fellowes usually gives their products great warranties and the SB-70 is no exception. The cutting mechanism is covered for up to 7 years.
And now the weaknesses:
- The SB-80 can shred continuously for up to 20 minutes. However, it needs twice that amount of time to cool off.
- This is a strip-cut shredder so it simply isn't going to offer as much security as a cross-cut machine. Thus, this device shouldn't be used for super classified documents.
- Unlike some of Fellowes' other shredders, the SB-80 is rather loud, so it might not be ideal for cramped workspaces.
The verdict:
Although the Fellowes PowerShred SB-80 has a few weaknesses (such as its long cooling-off time), overall it's a fantastic shredder for personal or small office use. It works very quickly and has the ability to shred a lot of different items. It is also safe to use and is unlikely to jam up on you, thanks to the paper capacity indicator. Plus, it's great that it's so compact and can fit under a desk without any trouble. And let's not forget that is has a fantastic warranty. With so many great features, it's pretty clear: the SB-80 is a great device for everyday shredding needs.

why do pilots have uniform (plus the strips: 3 for co-pilot, 4 for captain)?? Train drivers and others don't!
They interact with the public and must have a professional appearance. Same as officers onboard ocean going vessels. You normally do not see train engineers. As far as the epaulets (stripes) goes, there are actually more than the 3 and 4 stripes. It is a formal way to display seniority/rank.
1 stripe....normally not used (certain airlines/companies may use usually trainee or a seniority indicator)
2 stripes....Flight engineer and/or second officer
3 stripes....First officer (co-pilot/2nd in command)
4 stripes.....Captain (Pilot in Command)
Stripe color is dependent upon airline/company unless within the military.
