Information About Blood Pressure

What is blood pressure? Blood pressure is the force of your blood against your artery walls. When you have your blood pressure checked the reading has two numbers; one on top and one on bottom.

The top number is your systolic pressure. This is the force of your blood in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number is your diastolic pressure. This is the force of your blood in your arteries when your heart relaxes in-between beats.

Normal blood pressure would be a reading of 120/80 or lower. High blood pressure would be a reading of 140/90 or higher. If you have high blood pressure you are at a greater risk of a stroke or heart and kidney disease.

Many things can cause high blood pressure including physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol use, stress and your diet. These are only a few things. Certain medical conditions and medications can also cause high blood pressure.

High blood pressure can cause your body to have certain effects. For instance it can cause a stroke. The high pressure can cause a weakened blood vessel to break causing it to bleed into the brain; thus leaving you with a stroke.

High blood pressure can also sometimes cause your blood vessels in your eyes to bleed or burst. If this happens your vision will be blurred or impaired and might even result in blindness. Another reason it is best to keep control on your blood pressure.

Along with a stroke or kidney disease high blood pressure can also cause a heart attack. Your arteries are what bring blood carrying oxygen to your heart muscle. If your heart is not getting enough oxygen you will experience chest pain. If the blood flow is blocked as well you will experience a heart attack.

Congestive Heart Failure is very common among people with high blood pressure. This is a very serious condition where your heart cannot pump enough blood to supply the needs of your body. It is never too late to start taking control of your health starting with your blood pressure.

Anyone can develop high blood pressure, even children. It is more common for African Americans to develop it. Many Americans will develop high blood pressure as they age but that doesn't mean it is healthy.

Obesity plays a role in high blood pressure. If you are over weight you are at a higher risk of having high blood pressure as well as a stroke or heart disease. Try to lose at least ten pounds and this will help lower your blood pressure significantly.

Eating a healthy diet is a great way to lower or control your blood pressure. Limit your intake of salt and sodium and introduce more fresh fruits and vegetables into your diet. Once you establish your healthy diet you will have less worry of developing high blood pressure.

You should always have your blood pressure checked at your regular doctor visits. If you have high blood pressure and are concerned you can easily monitor from home. If you do this you want to have your doctor look at your home monitoring device to help ensure it is effective and you are operating it correctly.

Keep track of your blood pressure readings so you can see what is helping and what isn't. Sometimes regular lifestyle changes alone won't help as much as they would combined with blood pressure medication. Your doctor will be able to tell you what the best option for your needs would be.

A new U.S. label affiliation with the normally rather gothy Season of Mist label, as well as the lack of one of the Australian group's usual cheerfully vulgar album titles, suggests that this self-titled release is perhaps a more "grown-up" and "tasteful" album. Fat chance: if anything, Blood Duster is the group's most gleefully tasteless release yet, combining dead-on potshots at the mainstream punk scene (the almost Dickies-like "IWannaDoItWithADonna," "66.6ONYOURFMDIAL," and the anti-Avril Lavigne blurt "Sk8ergrrl") and song titles and themes swiped from G.G. Allin, the Beatles, and AC/DC with the usual constipated Muppet grindcore vocals and a greater than average devotion to the good old faster-and-louder ethos. It may not win them any new fans, but this is Blood Duster's best album by some distance. [A Japanese version added a bonus track.] ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

Poland's Vader have always believed in instant gratification. Their hammerhead death metal riffs pack no punches, tell no lies -- they just pummel away in wonderfully gimmick-free fashion. Having said that, rarely has the band unleashed such a uniformly vicious and speedy release as 2003's Blood E.P. Though this may seem surprising at first, one need only look back to the band's previous album, 2002's Revelations, for clues. Because said album was uncharacteristically dominated by some of the slower, most measured songwriting of Vader's long career, it's only natural that there be plenty of thrashers left over from its sessions -- and that's where positively scorching numbers like "Us the Fallen Rise," "Son of Fire," and "When Darkness Calls" come in. Promises in Blood [Bonus Track]

Promises in Blood [Bonus Track]

$34.39

Death metal didn't originate in Scandinavia any more than jazz originated in New York City; the blues originated in Chicago; or Afro-Cuban son, mambo, guaguancó, and cha cha originated in Puerto Rico. But just as the Big Apple became synonymous with jazz, Chicago became a blues mecca and Puerto Ricans became major players in Afro-Cuban music, death metal/black metal is now closely identified with the Scandinavian countries. That is true of the ultra-harsh, totally unforgiving stuff as well as the more nuanced approach known as melodic death metal (which is closely related to symphonic black metal). But saying that melodic death metal has been a largely Nordic phenomenon in the '90s and 21st century isn't saying that it has become an exclusively Nordic phenomenon -- and on Promises in Blood, Florida's Paths of Possession remind listeners that there is no reason why American moshers shouldn't continue to participate. One shouldn't forget that before Sweden and Norway became such crucial players in death metal/black metal, Florida was the home of producer Scott Burns and sledgehammer bands like Deicide, Obituary, Death, Malevolent Creation, Possessed, and Cannibal Corpse. In fact, the lead singer on this 2005 release is none other than George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher of Cannibal Corpse fame. But Promises in Blood isn't nearly as extreme as the grindcore that put Cannibal Corpse on the map. Fisher's vocals on this CD are generally a deep, guttural, demonic growl, but this time he is bringing his growl to songs that have real song structures and honest to God melodies. While Cannibal Corpse favorites like Butchered at Birth and Eaten Back to Life are exercises in brutality for the sake of brutality, Paths of Possession are -- for all their heaviness and intensity -- much more musical and nuanced. Promises in Blood won't go down in history as the most original CD of 2005, but it's a respectable demonstration of the fact that melodic death metal doesn't have to be Scandinavian to be worthwhile. [A Japanese version added a bonus track.] ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Gypsy Blood [Bonus Track]

Gypsy Blood [Bonus Track]

$12.79

The promise evidenced by Doll by Doll's Remember -- released earlier in 1979 -- is fully realized in Gypsy Blood. Fronted by vocalist, songwriter, and guitarist Jackie Leven, with new bassist Tony Waite (also the album's producer), Gypsy Blood is a big-sounding record; some of its tracks were deeply influenced by the production styles of both Phil Spector and Jack Nitszche. Musically, the soundboard is the same: big drums (David McIntosh) and guitars (Leven and Jo Shaw) up front with Leven's astonishing wide-ranging voice soaring over the entire proceedings. The songs, however, are shorter, and full of theatrical dynamics and near pathological passion. "Teenage Lightning" kicks off with the sound of snares and muddy tom-toms followed by silvery guitars riffs. Leven and Shaw sing in tandem with a purely harmonized classic '60s pop intro on the verses, when Leven explodes in the last couple of lines to push the entire band into some orgiastic pool of rock bliss (think Love crossed with Scott Walker) christened with a choir of female backing vocalists. The themes are pure rock romance: speed, cars, girls, attitude, and danger infect the track. The title cut follows; it's pure old-school (à la Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, and doo wop) rock & roll introduced by a jazzy Fender Rhodes line that could have been played by Georgie Fame at Ronnie Scott's. The "oooos" that commence barely prepare the listener for Leven's raw angry confessionalism: "I'll tell you this John boy, I'm not so green/I was married before I was 16 and/Rings on the finger of speed/I feel out of reach." The bridge is full of Rumi-esque poetry (or perhaps it's by Hâfez ranting about God and love) with crashing prog guitars knotting up the middle. The track flows out into quiet briefly before you can catch your breath, only to be followed by one of the greatest rock ballads ever written, "Stripshow." With its surrealistic imagery of desolation and loneliness contrasted with the desire for new love asserting itself in the waste of midnight isolation, romance and the need for contact slide into the heart and take possession, as the song's protagonist sings to an absent yet achingly desired beloved. Layered fingerpicked electric and acoustic guitars carry the verse with power chords screaming in the bridge, as Leven's falsetto and baritone underscore his lines with authority (think Tim Buckley and Walker in the same throat), promise, and desperate hope: "When the stripshow was over/And the management had turned out the lights/Silent people had walked back into the night/I thought of you/Still living alone/I know they say that love is blind/But if your heart was touching mine/I'll give you something that you can't ignore/I'll give you something you've been searching for...." Sad men in leather, steel combs, switchblades, and the poetry of tragic French poet and madman Antonin Artaud weave themselves into faux doo wop as a love song asserts itself equally in "The Human Face." Leven brings in a

A full two decades into their career, prolific Polish death metal act Vader remain near the top of their game on the searing Impressions in Blood. With the energy of bands half their age, Vader flirt with speedier tempos than their usual on tracks like "Shadows Fear" and "As Heavens Collide...." Singer Piotr Wiwczarek is one of the few death metal vocalists whose guttural bark of a voice brings up no involuntary associations with the Cookie Monster, and on the album's centerpiece track, his growling vocals mesh perfectly with a riff of epic sludginess that sounds like vintage Black Sabbath played at 16 rpm. There are some changes afoot here, including an increasingly obvious use of drum machines (the coda of "Field of Heads" is nothing but an industrial-sounding drum loop slowly decaying) along with some Mellotron-like string synthesizers amidst the guitars, but overall, Impressions in Blood is, in the best sense, more of the same. From the bestselling and PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author of Netherland, a fascinating, personal, and beautifully crafted family history. Joseph O'Neill's grandfathers--one Turkish, one Irish--were both imprisoned for suspected subversion during the Second World War. The Irish grandfather, a handsome rogue from a family of small farmers, was an active member of the IRA. O'Neill's other grandfather, a debonair hotelier from the tiny and threatened Turkish Christian minority, was interned by the British in Palestine on suspicion of being an Axis spy. With intellect, compassion, and grace, O'Neill sets the stories of these individuals against the history of the last century's most inhuman events.

In this family memoir, O`Neill explores the lives of both his maternal and paternal grandfathers, each of whom was imprisoned during World Was II for allegedly aiding the Germans.
